SYSTEM STATUS: ONLINE // CLEARANCE LEVEL: COMMAND TRANSMISSION ID: OTB-MECH-1987-05 SUBJECT: MOMENTUM – BREAKING THE ENEMY'S RESOLVE

In our previous briefing, we explored how the unexpected chaos of January 1987 paralyzed NATO and broke the Eastern Bloc into open revolt. Today, we shift back to the tabletop manuals to analyze the mechanical beating heart of On the Brink: Momentum.

In many traditional wargames, players can sit in heavy cover and turtle indefinitely without penalty. On the Brink eliminates stalemates by introducing a dynamic, high-stakes tug-of-war that measures your army's operational capacity, battlefield initiative, and willingness to fight.

The Absolute Rule of Momentum

To keep mental math fast and focused on tactical decision-making, the Momentum economy operates on a streamlined, strict foundation: Momentum is governed exclusively by objectives and casualties.

There are only two ways Momentum dynamically changes during a match:

  • Gaining Objectives (+ Momentum): When a player captures or secures an objective marker on the battlefield, it adds to their Momentum pool. Controlling key terrain provides the operational footing your army needs to maintain the initiative.

  • Losing Troops (- Momentum): When your forces are wiped out, your army’s operational resolve drains. Completely losing a Unit costs your army -1 Momentum,

If an objective is lost or contested by the enemy, its associated Momentum bonus is removed during the Resolution Phase.

No Turtling: The Ticking Clock of War

Because losing troops drains your pool and controlling objectives builds it, sitting still is a direct path to defeat.

To prevent late-game stalemates, scenarios enforce Battle Fatigue mechanics. At the end of every round each army's Momentum is reduced by one. We call this Battle Fatigue and it not only marks and army's energy level its also a natural timer to keep the game moving. Victory isn't achieved by hiding—it requires commanders to aggressively push forward, claim key terrain, and break the enemy's resolve before their own force collapses under operational fatigue.

Managing Activations & High-Risk Pushes

In addition to serving as an army-wide victory pool, physical Momentum tokens are placed next to units on the table to track which squads have already activated during the round.

Plaintext

================================================================================
TACTICAL CHOICE: SECONDARY ACTIVATIONS
================================================================================
[ACTION] DECLARE SECONDARY ACTIVATION ON UNIT
[CHECK] ROLL D10 AGAINST BASE LEADERSHIP (LDR)
[PENALTY] APPLY -1 MODIFIER TO LDR PER TOKEN CURRENTLY ON UNIT
[SUCCESS] UNIT ACTIVATES AND PERFORMS ACTIONS
[FAILURE] UNIT FAILS TEST -> ASSIGNED "GONE TO GROUND" -> ACTIVATION ENDS
================================================================================

If a commander desperately needs a squad to react or push a second time in a single round, they may attempt a additional activation. However, the unit must pass a Leadership (LDR) Test with a -1 penalty for already being activated this round. Failing this test forces the unit into a Gone to Ground state, locking them out from acting for the rest of the round.

In two weeks, our lore series continues with Post 6: The Restoration—examining the global broadcast of February 15, 1987, and the sudden emergence of the Neo-Prussian Empire from the shadows of Iron Cross Security Solutions.
